Patrick & Jessica :: Fearless Bridal Session in San Francisco

Patrick and Jessica were married only a little over a month ago and they were so anxious and excited to do a Fearless Bridal Session and so was I!  We met up at Baker Beach in San Francisco for a gorgeous day, not too cold and the waves were just unbelievable!  Both Patrick and Jessica were great sports through the whole session as the water wasn’t warm like in Hawaii or anything but we pretended.

Jessica, you are simply fabulous.

Baby Evan is coming soon :: My Fabulous Baby Shower!

I have been patiently (ok, impatiently) waiting for this day, my baby shower.  My good friends Aimee and Barbara designed, planned and coordinated the most fabulous baby shower a girl could ever ask or dream of!  And being that Aimee is also a wedding and events coordinator herself, 2 Chic Events and Designs, she brought out the big guns!  I had picked an October date for the shower hoping we could have everything outside but of course mother nature had other plans and decided to rain all day, bringing us indoors.  But everything still came together so nicely and I am so grateful to have such wonderful friends and family to share this special day with.  Thank you to everyone who made this day possible and to everyone who traveled in the rain to spend the day with me, I truly appreciate it!

Invitations Ink did such an amazing job on my invitations!

Barbara made most of the goodies on the candy table which were delish!

A huge thank you and big hug to Rebecca with Sweetcakes by Rebecca for making these adorable and yummy cookies!

Another huge thank you and hugs for Rashell and Jessica with Invitations Ink for creating all of the printed pieces including my amazing invitation, these candy thank you bags, the napkin holders, the stars and the food table place cards, just to name a few!

And huge thank you and hugs for Audrey with Botanica Floral Designs for putting the beautiful floral arrangements together!

Invitations Ink also put together these games which were so much fun to play!

And because Rashell and Jessica rock they also put together these letters made out of wood as my gift.  As if everything else they did wasn’t enough?!  Thank you both so very much!

Delicious cakes by Sweetcakes by Rebecca.  Really, how awesome are these cakes?!

Of course I had my camera around my neck most of the party!  Photo courtesy of my mom.

Another photo courtesy of my mom.  And the handmade blanket by Barbara.

And to top off the day, Joe with SJ’s Disc Jockey provided the oh-so-fun photo booth!

The booth was so fun my grandma couldn’t even resist to go in!

Jai & Michelle, Oct. 23, 2010 :: Sacramento Wedding Photography

In all of the years I have been photographing weddings, I had only experienced rain for 1 wedding.  Today, we make that 2 weddings.  But despite the rain and cold, Michelle was such a fabulous bride, she was stunning and also down to do pictures outdoors in the rain (it was just sprinkles for the most part).  Michelle picked up some awesome and colorful umbrellas the week before just in case we needed them and boy did we need them, plus they’re so cute in the pictures!  I loved that when I asked her if she’d be willing to do a couple pictures without an umbrella in the sprinkles she said “anything for the pictures, they’re the most important part!” and I fully agree!

I had the pleasure of working with Nicole with Conway Creations and Events.  Her and her assistant made sure Michelle and Jai’s day smooth and stress free!

I love how you can see the raindrops falling all around Michelle

Jai and Michelle were married at St. Francis Church in downtown Sacramento

After the ceremony we headed over to their reception location, The Croatian Cultural Center.  Since it was still raining we were very limited to where we could shoot their portraits, but Jai and Michelle were up for going into the rain for a few shots as well.  That’s why I love them!

Mike & Kim :: Granite Bay Country Club

Mike and Kim were destined to be together.  No really, they were.  They had dated a couple times in the past but Mike wasn’t looking for anything serious so he ended things.  Kim was hurt but tried to move on.  Then a couple years later her 2 good friends said they had this guy who they thought was PERFECT for her.  What are the odds that this Mr. Perfect was Mike?!  She decided to call him, and things just seemed to fall into place for these two.

They were married on October 16 at the Granite Bay Country Club

Katie with Ambience Floral Design rocked the floral arrangements

Jen with Image Provocateur did a fabulous job on Kim’s hair and makeup as always!

Are Digital Files Included with my Baby or Portrait Session?

I get asked this question a lot, “are the digital files included with my session?”  I do not include the digital files with my sessions, but I do offer a package where you can purchase the digital images on a CD.  I came across a very well written article by another photographer, Lauri Baker on Babyphotographers.com Blog.

“Surely you’ve noticed an increase in the number of photographers giving away digital files. As a customer, should you expect them to be for sale? Why don’t all photographers include them in the session fee for free, or at least make them affordable? Don’t the files belong to you anyway?

Federal copyright law is very clear about image ownership. They belong to your photographer, who has the sole right to print, display, and sell them.

You should expect the price of digital files, if available, to compensate your photographer for their work and talent. Baby {and Portrait} photographers don’t always sell a large package up front like wedding photographers. Instead, most charge a session fee that just covers some costs of providing the shoot. We rely on print sales as our sole source of income. The digital images are the key to those print sales. This is good for you. It means I have to do a good job for you, or I won’t get paid.

While many photographers do offer the files for sale, many baby {and portrait} photographers who specialize in creating custom art don’t.  For them, it’s a matter of quality control from start to finish. They realize cutting corners on that is a disservice to their clients.

Almost all of the file inquiries I get stem from an attempt to get my work for cheap… to get my vision, but to skip out on buying prints from me. Or from a misconception that digital is cheaper to produce than film. It’s not.

The equipment is much more expensive, replacements are necessary more often, and the workflow, maintenance, troubleshooting, and constant education requirements make digital much more expensive.

Even at that, the real value of digital files comes not from the cost, but what the files contain: the work and artistry that prompted you to choose that photographer. If you purchase files, expect to pay a price that values the work, and is sustainable for the photographer. You want him or her to still be in business when your new baby starts sitting up. Or walking. Or when your family grows.

If you’re looking for cheap portraits, and you don’t care about prints or a long-term photographer, cheap photography is available in abundance on places like Craigslist. You can have a session and all the files for very little money.  But for custom baby {and portrait} photography, the most important things to look for are artistry, image quality, experience with babies, safety, and service. Choose wisely – baby portraits are precious memories and family heirlooms.”
